Mission Statement
We, the concerned BIPOC alumni of The Governor's Academy, are committed to increasing measures of safety and support provided to current students of color by holding the institution accountable to strengthening a culture of anti-racism.
How we started
On June 1 2020, the Governor’s Academy shared a Facebook post recapping the Annual Pie Race in the midst of national witnessing and reckoning of the deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and more unjustly murdered black people. A fellow BIPOC alumna called out that the Academy had yet to recognize and speak to these tragedies and in doing so was causing harm to its BIPOC students, alumni and colleagues.
Several other alumni joined her in her frustration and added concerned comments to the post. Shortly after, mobilizing the disappointment and anger exposed from this facebook post, a group of BIPOC alumni began discussing and planning an extra-institutional collective that would work to hold the Governor’s Academy accountable to being an anti-racist institution that supports the well-being and growth of BIPOC students, faculty, and the Governor’s community as a whole. And so, we continue to build on this work today with over 200 collective members, collaborating through focused committees, frequent shared events and meeting spaces.
